With the explosion of food allergies & autoimmune responses skyrocketing since the past 20+ years, it occurred to me that I no longer buy into the idea that we are flawed somehow as humans to be increasingly developing food allergies & intolerances.
As someone who has suffered multiple food intolerances, seemingly out of nowhere, since my 20s, I’ve often felt hugely ashamed & isolated by my predicament. Feeling like an outsider at events & functions, not being able to chow down on my meal with reckless abandon because there may be a few simple ingredients within the meal which I know (from experience) will set me on a downward spiral of neurological hell for a good part of a week.
But what if I am not weird (we are not weird)? What if we are just not meant to eat those foods?
Or not those 'foods’, as such, but what if we are not supposed to eat foods that have been genetically modified & chemically treated with pesticides to within an inch of their natural, chemical & genetic framework?
Or maybe we are not meant to eat foods that can sit in plastic packaging for years without spoiling? I mean, how would your body react if you ate the plastic packaging the food came it? Not well??
Might it reject the item & react with a weird immune response?
Yeah, probably.
So how far removed from actual plastic is that processed & pre-packaged meal that has been sitting on the supermarket shelves since pre-COVID, waiting for you to take it home & chow down.
Because it is certainly not of a natural origin if it has survived unspoiled on the shelf for that length of time, am I right?
If I cooked a meal at home, I wouldn't give it longer than 5 days before I tossed it out of the fridge & into the trash. How about you? Does your home cooked food survive eons in the fridge or on the shelf?
What if my intolerance reaction may be immediate (eyes swelling, gums itching, stomach hurting, fatigue & migraine etc), but your reaction is a slower reaction such as autoimmune conditions, diabetes & cancer?
What if my alert system is LOUDER & immediate, alerting me to avoid that food asap, whereas your alert system is so vague & muffled that you don’t know that you shouldn’t eat those foods until it’s too late & you are in serious stages of disease?
I think I’ve come to the realisation that I don’t have food allergies nor food intolerance (we, as a society, don’t), what I (we) have is an inability to consume chemical & pesticide ridden 'foods' with a genetically modified structure & we have an inability to digest processed & artificially coloured, flavoured & preserved ‘foods’ that have been treated with chemicals to make them look like real food.
Basically, I can’t eat plastics & poisons. Much like a sea turtle, I’m not supposed to eat that stuff.
Can you? I don't know, maybe it’s your superpower??
Or maybe you can’t eat them either & that’s why you have diabetes, autoimmune conditions, depression & anxiety.
I don't know, but I have a feeling…

Chronic inflammation plays a role in common disorders such as anxiety & depression, ADHD, schizophrenia, asthma, diabetes, some forms of cancer, migraine, myopathy, gastrointestinal disorders such as IBD & IBS, neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s, autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, coeliac disease, cardiovascular disease, disease of the joints, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, to name but a few.
Common to these types of pro-inflammatory disorders is that they appear amongst the top 5 causes of death amongst men & women in Australia as well as plaguing society as a whole, leading to disability of young & old alike.
What exactly is inflammation & does it serve a purpose?
Inflammation forms a natural part of the body's defense mechanism. It is the process in which the immune system recognizes & removes harmful substances or stimuli from the body in order for the healing process to begin.
Inflammation is basically your body trying to remove the harmful substance & begin the process of healing itself. The problem is that if we continue to ingest or expose ourselves to environmental toxins & pro-inflammatory substances, our bodies cannot keep up & this is where disease manifests.
Unfortunately, the modern diet of processed food is flooded with chemicals, additives, preservatives & toxins that most of us have no idea what we are eating. And if you combine that with low levels of physical activity which slows down the body's natural detoxification processes, you are creating the perfect storm for chronic disease to manifest.
You literally are a result of what you eat, drink, do or don’t do & you manifest this into your reality one bite at a time.
Eating a healthy diet can often be seen as a sacrifice people are unwilling to make because they don’t want to give up their favourite meals of convenience. But the reality is that the more healthful foods you include in your diet, the better you’ll feel. And the better you feel, the less you’ll want to reach out for those meals of convenience because feeling healthy & well is sure damn addictive.
I tend to view it from a different perspective in that I am no longer willing to sacrifice my health & well-being for the sake of the modern diet.
The food you eat can either be the safest & most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.
