Did you know that it is estimated that between 70-90% of people will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives? Does that mean that we ALL (except maybe the lucky 10% of us) have a dodgy spine?
Whilst the modern lifestyle habits of poor posture (think sitting all day on the computer) does contribute to a bad back, there could be another reason why your back flares up from time to time & it's not what you may think.
If you've been suffering from back pain & all x-ray's & scans show nothing out of the ordinary & all efforts of postural alignment & stretching seem not to help at all, consider that you may be suffering from referred pain.
Referred pain means that you may have injury, inflammation or disease in another area or organ of your body & the pain is felt (or referred) into another area. In the same way that a heart attack can appear as pain which radiates into the jaw & left arm (as well as the usual crushing chest pain) or in the way that kidney stone pain doesn't immediately pop into your head as "Oh, my kidney hurts", but is felt as lower back pain on one or both sides.
Gallstones are felt as upper/mid back pain, gastro oesophageal reflux is felt as chest pain or upper back pain (nobody ever says, "Ouch, my oesophagus hurts") & gastrointestinal inflammation or ulceration is felt as lower back pain.
So many times I see clients complaining of lower back pain which doesn't respond to conventional treatment for traditional lower back pain. And regardless of how many physiotherapy or acupuncture sessions they may have had, nothing seems to provide relief. Patients are left with no option but to take daily pain medications or anti-inflammatories in order to get on with some level of daily functioning.
The problem is that anti-inflammatories & pain medications are notorious for damaging & causing irritation to the gastrointestinal tract which is only further going to exacerbate lower back pain, particularly when the initial cause of the backpain was gastrointestinal discomfort to begin with.
Can you see how it can easily become an endless cycle of PAIN = MEDICATION = IRRITATION & PAIN?
If you find yourself in a similar situation, it would be worth considering that there may be something else going on besides an unresolved sports injury. I would recommend getting in touch to assess whether you actually may be suffering from referred pain, which may be a result of a long-standing food intolerance or otherwise induced inflammation of the digestive tract.
The good news is that there is a very good chance that dietary modification could make a significant impact on your daily pain levels, your level of functioning & overall wellbeing to get you back to feeling at your very best.
Referred pain is not news to the medical community, it has always existed.
As humans, we are limited to the basics of:
My back hurts
My head hurts
My arms/legs
My throat hurts
Insert any other obvious body part here ...
The fact is, we have many other organs on the inside that we are not able to feel with the same conscious awareness that we are able to feel the outer parts of ourselves because well, that would be weird. "Ouch, my aorta!"
But your aorta does have feelings too. So does your oesophagus. And your digestive tract. And kidneys etc.

Chronic inflammation plays a role in common disorders such as anxiety & depression, ADHD, schizophrenia, asthma, diabetes, some forms of cancer, migraine, myopathy, gastrointestinal disorders such as IBD & IBS, neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s, autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, coeliac disease, cardiovascular disease, disease of the joints, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, to name but a few.
Common to these types of pro-inflammatory disorders is that they appear amongst the top 5 causes of death amongst men & women in Australia as well as plaguing society as a whole, leading to disability of young & old alike.
What exactly is inflammation & does it serve a purpose?
Inflammation forms a natural part of the body's defense mechanism. It is the process in which the immune system recognizes & removes harmful substances or stimuli from the body in order for the healing process to begin.
Inflammation is basically your body trying to remove the harmful substance & begin the process of healing itself. The problem is that if we continue to ingest or expose ourselves to environmental toxins & pro-inflammatory substances, our bodies cannot keep up & this is where disease manifests.
Unfortunately, the modern diet of processed food is flooded with chemicals, additives, preservatives & toxins that most of us have no idea what we are eating. And if you combine that with low levels of physical activity which slows down the body's natural detoxification processes, you are creating the perfect storm for chronic disease to manifest.
You literally are a result of what you eat, drink, do or don’t do & you manifest this into your reality one bite at a time.
Eating a healthy diet can often be seen as a sacrifice people are unwilling to make because they don’t want to give up their favourite meals of convenience. But the reality is that the more healthful foods you include in your diet, the better you’ll feel. And the better you feel, the less you’ll want to reach out for those meals of convenience because feeling healthy & well is sure damn addictive.
I tend to view it from a different perspective in that I am no longer willing to sacrifice my health & well-being for the sake of the modern diet.
The food you eat can either be the safest & most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.
