When we think about what generational trauma means & how it affects our daily lives, it is easy to project blame & to expect that our personal healing is based on the healing or corrected behaviour of those around us, our family or caregivers. We think THEY need to change, we WANT them to change.
The reality is that yes, they do need to change, they do require healing. In an ideal world, they too should correct their patterns of behaviour in order to create a harmonized environment in which WE can then begin to heal.
We could waste half our lives waiting for them to change. We could reach adulthood or middle age & remain as unhealed versions of ourselves, repeating patterns of unhealthy relationships & projecting our trauma onto those that tried to love us & failed, because only when they tried to love us did we discover how damaged we were. We could continue self-sabotaging our relationships because we are shattered on the inside & too terrified to truly let anyone in. We could blame our reactive behaviour on chemical imbalances, depression, anxiety & panic disorders.
Or we could wake up one day realizing that no one around us cares enough or is AWARE enough of the damage they have caused us & we can take responsibilty for our own healing journey.
And yes, it will be painful. Bringing up old wounds of generational trauma is not a 'walk in the park' type process. It's literally the digging up & dredgeing of the wounds that have remained in our subconscious since day dot. The painful emotions we tried to supress will emerge; we must re-feel, re-cry, re-process in order for release of those emotions. We must explore our past through journalling & talk therapy. We must ask ourselves probing questions & answer those questions honestly. And once we start this process, what is revealed to us can be quite astounding & enlightening. What will be revealed to us through this painful process is our shadow self.
Our shadow self is the embodiment of the dark side of human nature. Your inner demons & dark side of yourself that you keep repressed is that same part of yourself which is triggered & instinctively reactive when faced with certain events or situations in life; your triggers.
Once the subconscious mind is unravelled through these active channels of facing your shadows to promote healing, what emerges is an enlightened version of yourself. Aware of your shadows, you can move forward in life as the healed version of yourself, able to form healthier relationships with the world & most importantly, with yourself.
Healing through shadow work not only changes your perception & understanding of yourself, but it also promotes profound changes to your daily life because our outer life is a direct projection of what is going on within us.
If you think about your daily habits, your career choice, your hobbies, social interactions & perceived skills & abilities or your level of faith in yourself as a confident & capable human being, this is all directly correlated to our inner mind, the patterns that have been projected onto us via generational trauma.
We are & CONTINUE to be a projection of that person we were shaped to become by trauma & life experiences. We CONTINUE to make limited choices according to the limited perceptions of who we perceive ourselves to be & according to WHAT we were told within that toxic environment. Only UNTIL we decide that it is up to US alone to break the generational trauma patterns & RE-SHAPE ourselves, discover the essence of our true selves & RE-create ourselves anew.
It really is only up to us.

Chronic inflammation plays a role in common disorders such as anxiety & depression, ADHD, schizophrenia, asthma, diabetes, some forms of cancer, migraine, myopathy, gastrointestinal disorders such as IBD & IBS, neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s, autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, coeliac disease, cardiovascular disease, disease of the joints, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, to name but a few.
Common to these types of pro-inflammatory disorders is that they appear amongst the top 5 causes of death amongst men & women in Australia as well as plaguing society as a whole, leading to disability of young & old alike.
What exactly is inflammation & does it serve a purpose?
Inflammation forms a natural part of the body's defense mechanism. It is the process in which the immune system recognizes & removes harmful substances or stimuli from the body in order for the healing process to begin.
Inflammation is basically your body trying to remove the harmful substance & begin the process of healing itself. The problem is that if we continue to ingest or expose ourselves to environmental toxins & pro-inflammatory substances, our bodies cannot keep up & this is where disease manifests.
Unfortunately, the modern diet of processed food is flooded with chemicals, additives, preservatives & toxins that most of us have no idea what we are eating. And if you combine that with low levels of physical activity which slows down the body's natural detoxification processes, you are creating the perfect storm for chronic disease to manifest.
You literally are a result of what you eat, drink, do or don’t do & you manifest this into your reality one bite at a time.
Eating a healthy diet can often be seen as a sacrifice people are unwilling to make because they don’t want to give up their favourite meals of convenience. But the reality is that the more healthful foods you include in your diet, the better you’ll feel. And the better you feel, the less you’ll want to reach out for those meals of convenience because feeling healthy & well is sure damn addictive.
I tend to view it from a different perspective in that I am no longer willing to sacrifice my health & well-being for the sake of the modern diet.
The food you eat can either be the safest & most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.
